Whelp, Otakon 2016 is now officially over! But here are some pictures of my cosplays from the weekend. Unfortunately, it was so hot we didn’t stay in costume very long and with the construction in Inner Harbor we didn’t get great pics 😦 But hopefully when it cools down maybe we can go off for a photo shoot 😀
My Greek goddess Nyx Outfit and my sister and I did humanoid vintage Hamtaro and Bijou 😀
So over the weekend, I wasn’t feeling very good, and when that happens working on a project usually helps take my mind off of feeling like crap. I love craft therapy!
So I decided to bite the bullet and finally figure out Nyx’s Accessories. I had this jewelry set for years and I thought it would be awesome. But I wasn’t impressed with the look of the stones, so I swapped them out and now I am so happy! Can you tell the difference?
In the past 2 weeks, I have sewn and taken this dress apart about 8 times. But here is the semi finished final look 😀 The Glitter net is supposed to represent the black smoke that surrounds Nyx and is a veil. I also purchased my Wig and Circle Lenses 😀
Registered for Otakon 2016 last week!!!!
So Excited to Celebrate Otakon’s Last Year In Baltimore!
I am so happy that Otakon is now mailing badges! Those badge lines really were a pain!
If you haven’t registered yet, there is one week left to receive a mailed badge, it ends May 27th!
So I have been slowly and surely working on my Otakon Cosplays
They may be as follows:
– Woking on my Greek Goddess Nyx Cosplay
– Fixed My Cardcaptor Sakura Gown, (ahem, “it” shrunk in the last two years, cough)
-Still gotta fix her accessories
– Starting my Hamtaro Bijou Lolita Dress.
-Still Gotta buy the Wigs and Circle Lenses. Bah!
Arda Wigs and Pinkyparadise here I come!
(No Affiliate there, just love them!)
-Are you going to Otakon 2016 this year?
Who are you cosplaying?
So finally, after countless searching, I found the perfect fabric for my NYX cosplay 😀
It is from Joann’s Spirit Halloween Collection! I stumbled upon the last bit of it at one Jonann’s and then found another 5 yds at another 😀
So excited when that happens!
Here is the semi-finished skirt with a blue chiffon under layer.
I have been having some difficulty creating the top but of course I recieved some inspiration at midnight last night. Because of that, I was able to drape the fabric the exact way I would like it and I am hopefully going to work on the pattern for it tonight 😀
Here is the draped version!
The Left Side has the perfect shape and and the lines I was going for with this top. The straps are just an idea of where they would need to go 😀
I have always had a love for mythology. I am especially fond of Nyx, the Goddess of the Night or Nox as she is also known. I have had this idea for years to create a cosplay for her. But I just haven’t had the drive or energy. However, now with the new house almost squared away and my very own craft room, I have no more excuses and I have been itching to get creating and sewing again!
So facts about Nyx are pretty few and far between. I found a lot of sites somewhat depicting her, but this Wikia has probably all of that information rolled into one paragraph.
Nyx was described as a churning figure of ash and smoke, as big as the Athena Parthenos statue (which was 40 feet tall), but very much alive. Her dress was void black, mixed with the colors of a space nebula, as if galaxies were being born in her bodice. Her face was hard to see except for the pinpoints of her eyes, which shone like quasars. When her wings beat, waves of darkness rolled over the cliffs. She rode in on a chariot that was made out of Stygian Iron pulled by two massive horses that were black except for their silver fangs. Their legs floated in the abyss turning from solid to smoke as they moved. –Riordan Percy Jackson and the Olympians
So here are some of my concepts for creating her outfit.

Since the ability to draw was gifted to my baby sister, when I concept, I use scrap fabric on my mannequin so I can visualize my idea 😀
This is the first idea that came to mind, but I am trying out different tops with a flowy chiffon skirt.
Do you have any ideas on how I should approach this goddess’ cosplay?
Uh, the last two months have been super crazy busy. Not just at work, but during the weekends as well. I haven’t had any time to work on my Morgana Cosplay. It’s been a year since I started that project. Since I couldn’t make it to Otakon this year and I was so busy at work, I have it hanging out on the back burner. But I think since things are calming down, I might get back to finishing it up 😀 But anyway, while I haven’t had anytime to physically work on my cosplay, I have had time to concept a couple of ideas for my newest undertaking or undertakings 😀
My top concept is a character twist on my favorite classic lolita fashion 😀 I love classic lolita! About two years ago, I saw a couple character lolita outfits at Otakon, and thought some were gorgeous, while some kinda got lost, and weren’t very “lolita” anymore. I think this is one reason I have always been leery to do a character twist. Lolita is a fashion not a cosplay.
But, one of my sister’s best friends said she always wanted to do an Eeyore Classic Lolita dress. I was very intrigued and had always wanted to create a Pooh Bear Lolita Dress. He is after all my favorite of all time ( I have a quite a bit of Pooh bear items :D).
Anyway, I am currently concepting ideas to create a pooh classic lolita, while staying within the fashion and not going crazy with making it to “charactery” I want it to be subtle, but still understood.
I have some ideas so far. The following silhouettes are my top inspirations:D
Which Style do you think would work for this character lolita? What character would consider to concept into a lolita dress?
When I decide to work on a cosplay, the first thing I do is some pretty in-depth research on the character and the outfit I want to create. I pull tons of images/videos, weed through them, create a story board in InDesign, mark it up with ideas, concepts and materials and then I have that printout pinned to my wall for probably the next 6 or more months
I always seem to believe that I have all the information I could possibly need and then some. But then it comes a time and it always seems to be the little details especially with accessories that I am frantically looking for!
This was a huge case when I made CCS Sakura’s Star Wand and Accessories. I find it fun and challenging because sometimes the smallest details can make a pretty big impact 😀
Here are some of the images I found to use for my current cosplay of Morgana :3
I used, pinterest, google images, the Merlin Wiki, Tumblr and a ton of other search engines to help build good reference material!
The necklace was the latest thing I was researching for. I couldn’t see enough detail in the pendant on her and I luckily found an illustration online that I could use for creating the pendant 😀 I was super excited!
How do you research and organize for your cosplays? Are you still constantly finding yourself sometimes with a lot of images and still not finding what you need?
For some reason, I am always thinking ahead, especially when it comes to cosplay. My Morgana Cosplay is far from ready but I am getting an inspiration board together for my next undertaking. Unfortunately, I am in a state of confusion as to what I want to do. I have a couple options:
1. Classic Winnie the Pooh Lolita Outfit (my own design)
2.The Greek Goddess Nyx (my own design)
3. Mina Harker: But I am unsure, which way to go with her:
– Bram Stoker’s Dracula -League of Extraordinary Gentlemen or – Penny Dreadful
